Standing in Line 2017

Blaize Theatre Company

Lester Simpson presents  Standing in Line “A very personal story of the great war”

Standing in Line was commissioned by “Peace Concerts Passchendaele” and first performed in the church at Passchendaele, Belgium. It’s a story of the Great War using songs, readings and images, told by Lester Simpson, Mike Bettison and Nigel Corbett.

It’s over 90 years ago that Albert Scrimshaw was killed in the third battle of Ypres, better known as the battle of Passchendaele. Albert, born 1885 in Eastwell, Nottinghamshire worked as a butler near Oxford, married a girl from Windley, Derbyshire and became a farm labourer. He joined the “Ox and Bucks” regiment and marched off to war, never to return. His widow Annie lived in Duffield until her death in the 1970s.

Internationally acclaimed singer-songwriter Lester Simpson, of Radio 3 award winning Coope Boyes and Simpson, tells the story of his Great Uncle’s war. Lester’s songs have featured on radio, television, stage productions and most recently in a co-production with the former Children’s Laureate Michael Murpurgo.
